Student Printing—Jane Flegal, SGA, & Lee Bowie, Dean of the College, joined the group to discuss student printing. The SGA asked LITS to review the free printing allocation given to each student. Presently each student receives an allocation of $10 per semester for printing. The cost per page is $.05 per black and white and $.75 for color. If the allocation is not used during the first semester it rolls into the second semester. There is no charge for printing in the dorm labs but paper and toner are supplied by the residents of each dorm. LITS implemented the program in February 2005. Some of the reasons that lead to the implementation were the increased cost of paper and toner; MHC was the only college in the valley with free printing and a large number of outsiders printed here; and a large number of print jobs were never picked up. There have been no changes in the printing program since it began.

The amount of readings that are now in ella and electronic reserves was the main student concern presented by Jane and Lee. A majority of the students print their readings in order to underline, take notes and bring them to class for discussion. One of the other concerns was the amount of printing required for a senior thesis.
LITS will request reports on printing from the One Card Office and take the printing issue under advisement. Some of the things to be considered are raising the limit, possible cost sharing, and whether the supply cost per print has changed.

Periodicals Review
This year several academic departments have chosen to participate in the library's periodical review. The review is not exclusively a budget undertaking. LITS is interested in making sure our holdings match the curriculum. Maintaining the library collections is a joint responsibility of LITS and the faculty.

Other Business/Updates

Ella has taken off in the fall semester. Usage is at 80%. There are still issues to be worked on. We need to smooth out the connection between ISIS and ella for add/drop period. One solution is to try uploading more often. There are still problems uploading Five College students into ella. In fall 2008 there will be some version of a quizzing and testing module. Portfolios may become available in the next few years.

Don O'Shea is chairing a Search Committee for the LITS Director. The committee consists of representatives of faculty, LITS staff and some administrative departments. The committee invited 3 candidates to campus in December. One each on 12/6, 12/10 & 12/19. They will give an all campus presentation at 4-pm in Dwight 101.

There are problems with air quality, security, and service points in the Special Collections on Level 7 of Miles-Smith. LITS is exploring with Facilities and an architect possible ways to resolve the problems. Presently co-location of Special Collections with the Archives in Dwight basement area is being examined.
-
Deb will set up two LITS Advisory Meetings for the spring semester—one at the end of February and one in mid April.
