THANK YOU!! The conference was a great success!

The Mount Holyoke Alumnae and Students of Color Conference [ASOCC] 2009 was produced by the Alumnae Association of Mount Holyoke College with the help of many others who gave their input and encouragement. We would like to thank the many College departments that contributed to various aspects of ASOCC: Dean of Students, Multicultural Affairs, Diversity and Inclusion, the President’s Office, Admission, Development, Student Programs, and the Willits-Hallowell Conference Center. We would also like to thank Mindy M. Lewis ’75, Akua Soadwa ’03, and Kristine R. Woolery ’96 for serving on the Selection Committee and helping us choose fantastic panelists and workshop facilitators. A special thanks goes out to members of the Board of the Association for Pan-African Unity (APAU) and their continued initiative to remain involved in the planning of this endeavor. This event would not be possible without the continual feedback and support by alumnae and students of color. We appreciate and welcome your ideas, comments, and concerns — always.

Description of Conference

The Mount Holyoke Alumnae and Students of Color Conference [ASOCC] 2009 is a conference and forum for those who identify as women of color. This year’s theme, Strength, Courage and Wisdom: Capturing the Entrepreneurial Spirit, will offer a dynamic weekend of exploring our dreams and supporting one another in making a difference in our communities—and the world.

We want ASOCC 2009 to continue to reflect the diversity and complexity of our community/ies and identity/ies.  This conference is a community building event, as well as a wonderful venue for leadership, networking, and learning opportunities through a variety of workshops.

Statement of Purpose

We began this conference in 2007 out of a desire to see all alumnae and students of color explore and discuss our community/ies from a variety of perspectives.  We wanted a conference that honored the complexities of who we are as its central focus, while building community and offering support.  We feel we accomplished that in 2007, and now, in 2009, we want to continue to build community and bridges, supporting each other across borders and differences, and discovering our similarities.
