A list of fellowships for which Mount Holyoke alumnae may apply is below. This information was compiled in spring 2007. Contact the relevant department for application deadline dates in subsequent years, if they are not given below.

Department of Art and Art History, and Film Studies Program

The Louise Fitz-Randolph Fellowship

In memory of Louise Fitz-Randolph, MHC class of 1872, and distinguished professor of art history at the turn of the twentieth century.

Awards are made to graduates of Mount Holyoke who are studying art history, archeology, or history of architecture at the graduate level.

The Joseph Skinner Fellowship

The bequest of Joseph Skinner, a nineteenth-century Holyoke industrialist who was a trustee and benefactor of the college.

Awards are made to graduates of Mount Holyoke who are pursuing graduate work in studio art or architecture.

Department of Biological Sciences

The department has three graduate fellowships for which alumnae may apply:

A. Elizabeth Adams Fellowship (to be used to fund graduate studies in biological sciences)

Ira Skillman Stryker Fellowship (for graduates preparing to teach or do research in biological sciences; ordinarily this fellowship is used for summer study)

Morgan-Adams Graduate Fellowship (for graduate work in biological sciences)

These fellowships are ordinarily awarded for study toward graduate degrees in biological sciences (but not professional degrees). It may be used for summer study. Preference will be given to applicants, who have not previously received one of these fellowships.

Department of Economics

Virginia Galbraith Graduate Fellowship

Funds from the estate of the late professor Virginia Galbraith provide up to three annual awards to encourage graduate study in economics. The recipient of the Virginia Galbraith Graduate Fellowship will receive up to $3,000 to help support study towards a graduate degree in economics or in a field with a substantial component of economics at any accredited university. Other things equal, doctoral candidates will receive preference over others. Merit rather than need will be the principal criterion for selection.

The deadline for applications will be March 15, 2007. Application forms are available in the Economics Department. Three copies of the application form from the candidate and two separate letters of recommendation should be submitted to: Dawn Larder, Senior Administrative Assistant, Economics Department, MHC. It is anticipated that any Galbraith Award recipient will be notified by the department by March 31.

Robert Robertson Fellowship for the Study of Health Care

The Robert Robertson Fellowship for the Study of Health Care will provide financial support for a Mount Holyoke alumna pursuing graduate studies in economics, public health, or public policy programs. The graduate program should have both an economic and health component. Other things equal, doctoral candidates will receive preference over others. Merit rather than need will be the principal criterion for selection. The recipient will receive $1,000 to help defray the cost of her education.

The deadline for applications will be March 15, 2007. Application forms are available in the Economics Department. To be considered, candidates should submit, by the deadline, their application form, a statement of interest, and two letters of recommendation to: Dawn Larder, senior administrative assistant, Economics Department, MHC. It is anticipated that any Robertson Fellowship recipient

will be notified by the department by March 31.

 

Department of English

The English Department Graduate Fellowship for graduate study in English, without limitation as to place of study. Awarded alternate years with the Joseph Bottkol Fellowship, which assists in the purchase of books. Last awarded spring of 2007; will next be offered in 2009.

Request an application from the administrative assistant in the English department office. Applications are due by April 15.

 

Department of History

Joseph A. Skinner Fellowship

To assist MHC alumnae who are in the final year of writing a doctoral dissertation in history.

Applications are due approx. March 1. To apply, please contact the administrative assistant in the History Department, Holly Sharac or Associate Professor of History Jeremy King.

 

Department of Politics

The Department of Politics is pleased to announce the awarding of the following three fellowships in 2006–07. The fellowships are not restricted to students majoring in either politics or international relations. Former applicants, including recipients, may reapply.

There is no application form. To apply, write to the chair, Department of Politics, describing the proposed plan of study. Enclose an official transcript of undergraduate and, where appropriate, graduate study and arrange for the submission of two letters of recommendation. The deadline for receipt of letters of application and supporting materials is February 14, 2007.

Ruth C. Lawson Fellowship in International Politics

The Ruth C. Lawson Fellowship was established in 1976 by colleagues, students, and friends of Miss Lawson. Stipend: $5,000. To be awarded every year. The fellowship is awarded to a student who holds or is a candidate for a degree from Mount Holyoke, preferably pursuing advanced study in international politics.

Ellen Deborah Ellis Fellowship in International Relations

The Ellen Deborah Ellis Fellowship in International Relations was established in 1944 by students and friends of Miss Ellis. Stipend: $2,000. To be awarded every year. The fellowship is awarded to a student who holds or is a candidate for a degree from Mount Holyoke, preferably for graduate work. The work in international relations may be taken preferably abroad, or at Mount Holyoke or elsewhere in this country.

Donald G. Morgan Fellowship in Law

The Donald G. Morgan Fellowship was established in 1976 by colleagues, students, and friends of Mr. Morgan. Stipend: $1,500. The fellowship is awarded to a student who holds or is a candidate for a degree from Mount Holyoke, preferably for attending law school. In the event that no award is made for law school in a given year, an award may be made for graduate study in political science involving a special interest in the theory, development, values, and adaptability of the U.S. Constitution.

 

Department of Psychology and Education

Stephen H. Davol Fellowship

The fellowship, with a maximum stipend of $500, is awarded by the department to a Mount Holyoke senior or alumna who 1) is planning to attend a graduate program to pursue further study in some area of developmental psychology, preferably early childhood, 2) has already been accepted in such a program, or 3) is currently enrolled in a program.

Applicants should write a brief personal essay that describes the proposed plan of study or research and current career goals and, in addition, should have two letters of recommendation sent to the department. All materials should be forwarded to:

Professor Stephen H. Davol was a member of the Department of Psychology and Education from 1960 until his untimely death in 1982. The fellowship is funded by gifts in Professor Davol's memory from his wife, Marguerite A. Davol, his children, Susan Carlson, Jonathan Davol, and Sarah Davol ’81; other members of his family and friends.
