Friday, February 29 –Saturday, March 1, 2008

“The Future in Communications” begins Friday evening and ends Saturday afternoon.  The event includes dinner on Friday, panels with distinguished alumnae, career discussions, Saturday breakfast and lunch, and an alumnae networking and cocktail reception.  The registration fee is $25 ($10 for alumnae in the classes of 1997-2007, $5 for students). The meal fee (Friday dinner, Saturday breakfast and lunch) is $50.

A block of overnight rooms for Friday and Saturday has been made with the Hampton Inn in Hadley, MA. The rate is $89 per night plus tax. Click here to reserve overnight accommodations or call 1-800-HAMPTON (refer to EAJ/Future in Communications as the group code).  Individual cancellations must be made 24 hours prior to arrival.  Please note that you do not need to be a registered member with the Hampton Inn to make an online room reservation.

Shuttle & Parking Information

Transportation from the Hampton Inn to the College will be available.  Please refer to the Tentative Schedule below for shuttle departures.  On campus parking is available in faculty/staff spaces after 4pm on Friday.

Priscilla Painton ’80, editor in chief, Simon & Schuster

Elizabeth Spiers, founder of DeadHorse media, founding editor of Gawker.com, and former editor-in-chief of mediabistro.com.

Priscilla Painton '80

Priscilla Painton ’80 was recently named editor in chief of the publishing company Simon & Schuster.  She was formerly deputy managing editor of Time magazine. As a visiting professor of journalism at Mount Holyoke in the fall of 2006, she taught the course, “Can You Trust a Journalist?”  Painton, who has worked at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Washington Post, and Berkshire Eagle, was an assistant managing editor at Time before assuming her current title.  She also served as the magazine’s national editor for six years, responsible for political reporting that included the re-election of Bill Clinton in 1996, the rise and fall of Newt Gingrich, and the presidential campaign of 2000.  In 1998, she oversaw the magazine’s coverage of the Kenneth Starr investigation and President’s Clinton’s impeachment trial and edited Time’s “Men of the Year” cover story on Kenneth Starr and Bill Clinton.

Elizabeth Spiers

Elizabeth Spiers is the founder of Dead Horse Media, which produces DealBreaker.com, an online business tabloid and Wall Street blog, and other Web publications. Her debut novel, And They All Die in the End, will be published by Riverhead Books.  Until November of 2005, Spiers was the editor-in-chief of mediabistro.com. Prior to mediabistro, she was a contributing writer and editor at New York magazine, covering entertainment, media, and business.  Spiers was previously the founding editor of Gawker.com, one of Time magazine’s “Top 50 Web sites” for 2003.  She graduated from Duke University with a B.A. in political science and public policy.
